Archery Range Officer:
Archery Range Officer training is aimed at teaching adults how to safely run an archery range for council events. Safety procedures and safe bow and arrow handling are the keys to the training, along with how to work with the Scouts to develop good shooting habits. This does not certify someone to open the archery range just for their den or pack events.

BB Range Officer:
BB Range Officer training is aimed at teaching adults how to safely run a BB gun range for council events. Safety procedures and safe gun handling are the keys to the training, along with how to work with the Scouts to develop good shooting habits. This does not certify someone to run a rifle range, nor to open the BB range just for their den or pack events.

Risk Management:
This hands-on workshop is designed to give participants the tools and information they need to ensure the physical and mental well-being of participants in the Scouting program, lead efforts to instill the values of personal fitness and accident, injury, and illness prevention, and protect the people, property, and environment of the Boy Scouts of America.

Health and Safety:
BSA Health & Safety is a fast-paced 90 minute course for all scouting volunteers with everything you need to know to Be Prepared in Scouting! Information on camping, youth protection, first aid, fuels and fire prevention, swimming/boating, guns and firearms, sports and activities, safety for meeting spaces, medical information, transportation and more.

Transporting Scouts Safely:
Often, the most dangerous part of a Scouting activity is driving to the location of that activity. This program will help  identify the signs that could lead someone to an accident and ways to prevent accidents.

Trainer's EDGE:
This is the required “train the trainer” course for NYLT and Wood Badge Staff.

Training Tip of the Month: What Can be Done Online?

Although some training courses are only available “live,” quite a few can be done online at https://myscouting.scouting.org/. Under “E-Learning” you will find links to online training courses for many position-specific courses (e.g. Youth Protection, Cub Leader Specific Training, Troop Committee Challenge), as well as Supplemental training required for specific activities (e.g. Safe Swim Defense if your unit is going to engage in water activities or Trek Safely for backpacking).

When taking an online training course, it is crucial to have your BSA membership number handy, otherwise you will not receive credit for having completed the course.

In other cases, physical attendance at a live course is required. Notable examples include Scoutmaster/Assistant Scoutmaster training (all-day, indoor), BALOO, OWL, and IOLS (outdoor activities), or Woodbadge, as well as supplemental training such as Chemical Fuels or Transporting Scouts Safely which are often done as one-hour workshops at a Roundtable or similar venue.

Finally, there are courses such as Cub Leader Specific Training that can be done either live or online. When possible, you are strongly encouraged to do these live since a substantial portion of the benefit derives from your interactions and networking with other participants.

Trained Today is distributed on the second Wednesday of each month. If you received this directly from the Cradle of Liberty Council, you're subscribed to the Training Newsletter list.
