Training Tip of the Month

What do the different courses offered by the Shooting Sports Committee allow/authorize you to do in Scouting?

Currently, the Shooting Sports Committee offers NRA courses in three disciplines – rifle, shotgun and pistol. The courses offered are Basic and Certified Instructor. Range Safety Officer is a separate certification not tied to a specific discipline.

Basic courses, as you might expect, introduce the student to the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to be a successful shooter. Safety is Rule 1, 2 and 3! Range time is somewhat limited. At the end of the course, the student should be able to safely, comfortably and confidently spend time on the range honing his or her individual marksmanship skills. This course imparts no specific authorization to work on a Cradle of Liberty or BSA range. It is a course for basic skill development and personal satisfaction.

Certified Instructor courses are offered in the three main disciplines. Before admittance to the class the student must demonstrate an acceptable level of proficiency and knowledge of the safety procedures and techniques required in the specific discipline.  The student must also take and pass an NRA Basic Instructor Training course (BIT). Only then can they attend the discipline specific Certified Instructor Course to learn the skills, knowledge and attitudes required to be an NRA Certified Instructor. Upon successful completion of all they will be eligible to become an NRA Certified Instructor for rifle, pistol or shotgun. Each course and certification is separate from the others. Upon successful certification the student may assist on COL or BSA ranges as a Certified Instructor for that specific discipline. under the supervision of a Range Safety Officer.

The Range Safety Officer course teaches students the detailed considerations required to safely and effectively organize and operate ranges according to the NRA guidelines, practices and procedures. It is a higher level course dealing with the requirements to successfully and safely plan, organize and operate almost any range.  AN NRA Range Safety Officer can organize and safely operate ranges for COL or BSA with the assistance of an appropriate number of trained assistants, either other RSO’s or Certified Instructors.

Individual  RSO or Certified Instructor must present their credentials each time to the Camp Director or Camp Ranger to verify that their credentials are current and valid.

Trained Today is distributed on the second Wednesday of each month. If you received this directly from the Cradle of Liberty Council, you're subscribed to the Training Newsletter list.
