Training Tip of the Month

Who Needs Cold Weather Training?

With the onset of fall, our thoughts naturally turn to cold weather activities with our Cub Scouts, Scouts or Venturers. These activities are lots of fun, but can also require special preparation, clothing, first aid knowledge, and equipment to be safe. The Cradle of Liberty Council offers annual Cold Weather training seminars to help prepare leaders for these activities. They are strongly encouraged for any units planning outdoor activities, and are required for the Pilgrimage and Encampment as discussed below.

The Pilgrimage and Encampment is one of our council's signature events. This is the only time camping is allowed in Valley Forge National Park! Scouts, Venturing Crews and adult leaders are invited to the full weekend of camping, February 13-15, 2015 (or just to visit), while Cubs, Cub Leaders, parents, siblings and guests are invited to the day Pilgrimage event only (February 14).

Cold Weather training is required for leaders on either of these events. For the Pilgrimage, at  least one adult must complete the evening training on January 8, 2015 (this training is good for 3 years), while for the Encampment at least one adult leader and one boy leader must attend the full day training on January 3 (this training is good for 2 years). These training courses meet National Park Service requirements. Topics covered include winter dress, winter outdoor first aid, and Leave No Trace (evening session only) plus outdoor winter cooking, chemical fuels, and winter tenting (full day session).

Registration links will be available on the www.colbsa.org/valleyforge by October 15, 2014.

Trained Today is distributed on the second Wednesday of each month. If you received this directly from the Cradle of Liberty Council, you're subscribed to the Training Newsletter list.
