NRA Basic Pistol Training Instructor-Led (learning how to use a pistol) Saturday Only

The course includes classroom and range time learning to shoot pistols.  The course is intended for all adults regardless of previous shooting experience or NRA affiliation. Students learn gun safety rules, proper operation of revolvers and semi-automatic pistols, ammunition knowledge and selection, selecting and storing a pistol, the fundamentals of shooting, and pistol inspection and maintenance.  Students will receive the Basics of Pistol Shooting handbook, take a Basics of Pistol Shooting Student Examination, and receive a course completion certificate.

During the course, an NRA certified instructor will validate comprehension and application of gun safety rules; range protocol; proper handling; loading and unloading procedures; application of pistol shooting fundamentals; stable shooting positions; live fire; and a final shooting qualification.



Pistol Instructor Training PHASE 3 (this position along with a Range Safety Officer allows you to open a pistol range)

This course teaches the knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to organizing, promoting and teaching NRA’s Basics of Pistol Shooting course. This course is considered “Phase 3.” Prerequisite: Candidates must first complete Phase 1 online training through Students demonstrate organizational and teaching skills via participation in practical exercises during the course and complete an instructor certification examination. Students will receive the NRA Pistol Shooting Instructor Candidate Packet (electronically downloaded). It is suggested that students complete the Basic course (Phase 1, online and Phase 2, shooting qualification) prior to an Instructor class.

NOTE: Instructors must take a BIT course every 24 months prior to taking an Instructor rated course. BIT is being offered on Friday at 7 PM for Instructor Candidates


All participants will need their BSA membership number to register for this course.


All candidates will be required to sign a commitment form to assist in the Boy Scouts of America Shooting Sports Program. 


Here is part of the commitment:

Instructor and RSO candidates will agree to help the Boy Scouts of America in the creation and/or implementation of the year-round shooting sports program within the Cradle of Liberty Council. The purpose of this commitment is to provide the local Council with resources to help with the shooting sports merit badge program and the year-round shooting sports program offered to Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Varsity Scouts, Venturers and Sea Scouts within the Council. This agreement is in return for the discounted NRA Instructor Training. Candidates must understand the importance and the necessity of participation to assist the Council in a successful year-round BSA shooting sports program.   Candidates must assist in Council activities and not just with the unit the candidate is involved.

Cancellations up to one week before the course.10% is non-refundable (minimum $5) unless the course needs to be canceled. No refunds for no-shows or those that do not complete the course.
